Marsyas Trio

Sponsored by:

Australian flautist Helen Vidovich, Canadian cellist Valerie Welbanks and pianist Fei Ren from New Zealand met as postgraduate students at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Since 2009, the Marsyas Trio has performed throughout the UK, Europe and Asia. The ensemble has received generous support from Arts Council England, PRS for Music Foundation, the Britten-Pears Foundation, Ambache Charitable Trust, Hinrichsen Foundation and the RVW Trust. Dedicated to music for flute, cello and piano from all eras, the Trio is also proactive in the performance of new music, with an aim to inspire a generation of new works for this chamber ensemble through working with living composers. In May this year the Marsyas Trio’s debut CD was released by Meridian Records, featuring chamber works by Elena Firsova.

The trio has appeared on Bulgarian National Television and Classic FM and the Bulgarian National Radio. In April 2013 the trio returned from a tour of seven concerts in China, and in 2012 completed a UK West Country tour for Concerts in the West. Other performances include the St John’s Smith Square, the Reform Club, the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, Bulgaria, the Lake District Summer Music Festival, National Portrait Gallery, The Forge, St Martin-in-the-Fields and St James’ Piccadilly. Their latest commission is from the British composer Laura Bowler, as part of a collaborative project at the 2014 Grimeborn Festival at the Arcola Theatre in London.

Marsyas Triotakes its name from Greek mythology – a dedication to the pipe-playing satyr, Marsyas. Having dared to compete in a musical contest with Apollo, God of the Lyre, Marsyas won the contest but lost his life to the envious wrath of Apollo, saving his dying breaths for the instrument he immortalized. This mythology encapsulates the spirit and passion of becoming a musician.
