1877 - Grace, Heartache & Joy!

1877 is, without doubt, a vintage year for classical music, during which time the world was gifted three extraordinary masterpieces.
Tchaikovsky's iconic Swan Lake received its world premiere, a piece which has become one of his most famous and beloved, infatuating audiences everywhere with its grace, beauty and charm.
Following on from the success of his first concerto, dedicated to Brahms's good friend, the celebrated violinist Joseph Joachim, Bruch wrote his second violin concerto in 1877. It is even more heartfelt and touching than his first concerto.
After the supreme effort to write his first symphony, battling the demons for over 20 years in the aftermath of Beethoven's legacy before completing a piece which is full of turbulence and struggle, Brahms penned his second symphony in only a matter of months, during his summer holiday of 1877 in the beautiful Austrian holiday resort, Pörtschach. This second symphony is full of joy and lightness and is one of his most sunny and life affirming works ever written.

We warmly welcome back star-violinist and Classical Brit Award winner, Jack Liebeck, as our soloist for the evening, who has just released all of Bruch's violin works on a highly acclaimed double disk for Hyperion.
